The Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long record of medicinal use in Asia. It grows in fascinating shapes and its shiny, reddish-brown and yellow-banded coloring make it a visually appealing species. Reishi is taken as a health supplement and to treat several illnesses, including HIV/AIDS and cancer. Its action is thought to be primarily immune stimulatory. Reishi is made into a tea by boiling broken up mushroom pieces until they become soft. The pieces are then steeped for an additional half-hour, and consumed after straining out the solids. The tea can be made in batches and refrigerated for later use. The taste varies from a mildly sweet and rich flavor to bitter, depending on the particular mushroom strain. Two to three grams of liquid tea per day is recommended if taken as a health supplement.

This product does not contains any additives or carriers, it is simple 100% pure reishi powder. Every month we get new batch of reishi mushroom powder. This very hot selling item. This powder was of very low quality. Reishi powder should be very bitter as an indication of purity. If it is minimally bitter and is slightly sweet, this indicates a high percentage of the grain based growing medium has been incorporated into the powder. This powder was more sweet than bitter, and when added to 95% ethanol as the first stage of a dual extraction, it hardened to a an unmanageable consistency. It resists being broken up by even sharp metal objects, so the whole bottle (about $120 total including the everclear used as an extractant) will have to be discarded. I have never experienced this before with Reishi, and I can only assume that is due to the high starch content from the growth medium. I will be testing it with potassium iodide to confirm the starch content. I would avoid this product.
