Antimicrobial and pharmacological actions of some fractions obtained from the bark of S. Racemosa have been investigated. A crystalline fraction is found to inhibit the growth of staphylococci, E.coli, enteric and dysenteric group of organisms. The plant and its formulations are used in diarrhoea, for wound healing and to stop haemorrhage. It is also used in skin and eye infections. The standard doses are well tolerated.
