With tonic effects on the lungs and kidneys, its stimulating-action makes it useful as an expectorant to cough up obstinate catarrh; used in certain asthmas to dilate bronchioles and decrease chest constriction. For the urinary tract, it is mildly diuretic. Externally (fresh only) it can be applied to poison ivy and skin rashes to cool, soothe and prevent itching.
