Hyssop is an evergreen, bushy herb that grows to 1 to 2 feet high. It has square stem and linear leaves. The flowers are arranged in whorls of six- to fifteen. The attractive flowers of Hyssop grow in spikes and are either deep blue or pink. The flowers are very fragrant and attractive to bees. It has a minty taste and its woody stems have small pointed leaves. Hyssop has expectorant, diaphoretic, stimulant, pectoral and carminative properties. Hyssop Tea improves the tone of a feeble stomach and cures asthma. The infusion of its leaves relieves muscular rheumatism, bruises and discoloured contusions. Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) is an herb traditionally used in herbal medicine. It has historically been described as having expectorant (helping loosen mucus), carminative (reducing gas), and mild stimulant properties. Hyssop tea has been used traditionally to support digestion and to help relieve coughs and congestion associated with colds. Compresses or infusions made from the leaves have also been used in folk medicine for minor bruises and muscle discomfort. However, there is limited high-quality scientific evidence to confirm that hyssop effectively treats conditions such as asthma, rheumatism, or stomach disorders. People with epilepsy, those who are pregnant, and young children should avoid medicinal amounts of hyssop because some constituents, particularly in the essential oil, may increase the risk of seizures or other adverse effects.
