Botanic Name: Betonica officinalis
Wood Betony is a slender plant that grows to a height of 1 to 2 feet. The plant bears stalkless leaves which are 2 to 3 inches in length and about 3/4 to 1 inch in breadth. At the top of the stem, the plant possesses two-lipped flowers which are purplish-red in colour. The flowers bloom during July and August. Wood Betony has astringent and alterative action. The herb combined with other remedies is used as a tonic to cure dyspepsia, rheumatism, scrofula and impurities of the blood. It is useful in hysteria, neuralgia and in all nervous affections. Its weak infusion is a good substitute for tea.
