Deoxyarbutin is a synthetic derivative of β-arbutin used as a skin-brightening and tone-evening active. Its INCI name is Tetrahydropyranyloxy Phenol. It works primarily by reversibly inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. Deoxyarbutin has been investigated for reducing the appearance of uneven pigmentation, improving the appearance of dark spots and age/sun spots, promoting a more even-looking skin tone, and providing an overall brightening effect. Research has demonstrated reversible tyrosinase inhibition and reductions in melanin production. It has therefore historically been considered for products such as brightening serums, facial creams, dark-spot products, tone-correcting formulations and anti-aging skin-care products.
