Rubia cordifolia is the botanical name for Indian Madder, commonly called Manjistha in Ayurveda. It is a climbing plant traditionally used in herbal preparations, and its root is the part most commonly used. The root contains various anthraquinones and other phenolic compounds, including compounds such as purpurin and manjistin. These constituents are responsible for much of the plant's characteristic reddish colour and have been investigated for antioxidant and other biological activities. Rubia cordifolia is a glycerine extract, it is much more suitable for direct incorporation into cosmetic formulations than the raw root powder.
