Botanic Planet Canada Inc. Now Carries Denatured Alcohol (SDA) 40B. SD alcohol has additives, namely bitrex, which is odourless but renders the alcohol undrinkable. Most commercially-prepared quality perfumes utilize perfumer's alcohol in their formulations. Perfumery alcohol is a "fixative" for natural essential oils and man-made ingredients in the event that the perfumes must sit for months on a retail shelf. Denatured Alcohol SDA 40B (Specially Denatured Alcohol 40-B) is commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products. SDA 40-B is ethanol (ethyl alcohol) that has been denatured meaning it’s made undrinkable by adding a denaturant (like t-butyl alcohol or denatonium benzoate). The 40-B formula is specifically approved for cosmetic and topical use.
Common Uses of SDA 40-B in Skincare and Cosmetics
Antiseptic & Astringent
Often found in hand sanitizers, toners, and acne treatments.
Solvent
Helps dissolve active ingredients or botanical extracts, particularly in perfumes, sprays, and certain serums.
Preservative Booster
Enhances antimicrobial efficacy, helping preserve water-based formulations.
Evaporation Control
Evaporates quickly, making it useful in quick-drying products like setting sprays and body mists.
Carrier for Fragrances
Common in perfumery and fine fragrances to help disperse essential oils and fragrance oils evenly.
Safety & Formulation Considerations
Drying to Skin: Overuse in high concentrations can strip natural oils, leading to dryness or irritation.
Concentration Range: Usually used between 5%–20% in skincare, but up to 70%+ in sanitizers.
Regulatory Compliance: Must be used according to local regulations (e.g., FDA in the U.S., Health Canada, EU Cosmetics Regulation).
